President Obama’s beliefs, now made infamous in his “You Didn’t Build That” speech, contradicted what Catholics believe. However, “You Didn’t Build That” was not the context of the speech. The President also claimed “We created a lot of millionaires” and other claims. What this speech really showed, was his impossible belief that the government through centralized planning, collectivism and thus socialism creates initiative, economic activity and ultimately your success. He meant that he and the state give you the right to be motivated, to work and achieve things for yourself and your family. Catholicism rejects these (his) beliefs in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) in sections CCC 1883, 1885, 2425, 2429 and 2431:
CCC 1883 “Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative… a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions..”
CCC 1885 “The principle of subsidiarity is opposed to all forms of collectivism…“
CCC 2425 “The Church has rejected the totalitarian and atheistic ideologies associated in modern times with “communism” or “socialism.”
CCC 2429 “Everyone has the right of economic initiative… and to harvest the just fruits of his labor…”
CCC 2431 “The responsibility of the state.
Economic activity, especially the activity of a market economy, cannot
be conducted in an institutional, juridical, or political vacuum… it presupposes sure guarantees of individual freedom and private property… the principal task of the state is to guarantee this security, so that those who work and produce can enjoy the fruits of their labors…
Go to the minutes 51:40 to 52:55 below on the video to see where Obama said these things and the disdain with which he said them. Additionally, you will notice his contradictory proposition in minutes 52:55 to 53:00 when after promoting contradictions to Catholicism of centralized planning, collectivism and socialism, he attempts to circle back when he says, “… we succeed because of our individual initiative.” He can’t have his contradictory propositions:
- “We created a lot of millionaires.”
- “If you’ve been successful you didn’t get there on your own.”
- “Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business… you didn’t build that. Somebody else built that. Somebody else made that happen.”
- “Government research created the internet.”
O Holy Spirit, strengthen us to defend all that is holy.
